Two days in Padua give you time for Giotto’s frescoes, the historic centre and the open spaces around Prato della Valle. Book the Scrovegni Chapel first, then arrange trains, luggage storage and meals around that fixed appointment. For a single day, the chapel, central squares and Basilica of Saint Anthony make a manageable core itinerary; leave longer museum visits and the botanical garden for another day. One important date restriction applies in 2026: the chapel closes from 16 to 27 November for its annual fresco inspections, so travellers coming primarily for Giotto should check their dates before committing.

How many days do you need in Padua?

The Eremitani area south of the railway station is a practical starting point. After your chapel appointment, walk towards Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta, combining the squares with Palazzo della Ragione. You can continue towards the basilica later, but if you want a substantial visit to the Eremitani collections, move the southern sights to the following morning. Choosing between these two versions prevents lunch and museum visits from becoming a sequence of hurried departures.

Padua also warrants an overnight stay of its own. The municipality’s 2026–2027 planning document records 826,435 accommodation arrivals and 1,764,999 overnight stays within the city in 2024. These figures do not measure day-trippers or unique individuals, but they provide a genuine tourism indicator. Staying in the centre lets you enjoy the squares after the daytime museum programme and begin the next morning without another journey into town.

How do you book the Scrovegni Chapel?

The official booking rules require online reservations at least twenty-four hours ahead; same-day reservations are unavailable. Unbooked visitors may ask the museum ticket office about remaining same-day availability, but should not build a trip around obtaining it. The normal chapel visit lasts fifteen minutes. Late arrivals may need to book and pay again, so leave time between your train and entry for luggage and ticket collection. Reach the waiting-room entrance five minutes before your slot and leave large suitcases elsewhere.

Daytime visits run between 09:00 and 19:00, with the final entry at 18:45. Annual closures include 25 and 26 December and 1 January. The current announcement additionally confirms the 16–27 November 2026 inspection closure. Read a little about the arrangement of Giotto’s scenes before entering: that makes the brief visit more rewarding than trying to identify everything for the first time inside. Allow separate time for the adjacent museum complex; an evening chapel ticket should not be assumed to have the same museum coverage as a daytime ticket.

How do you arrive from the station or Venice airport?

Busitalia’s visitor route recommends the southbound tram towards Guizza from the station, getting off at Garibaldi Eremitani for the short walk to the chapel. Decide how to pay before boarding. The contactless TU1 ticket costs €1.70 and lasts ninety minutes within the city’s orange zone. Journeys beyond that zone require a different ticket; contactless payment is available only on vehicles displaying the relevant symbol.

Tickets bought through the Busitalia app must be activated at least one minute before boarding a bus or tram. Purchasing alone does not make the ticket valid. From Venice Marco Polo airport, the direct Padua bus serves Padova Autostazione. The current airport departure table runs from 06:30 to 23:50 at forty-minute intervals, with a scheduled journey of approximately forty-five minutes. Keep flight delays and road traffic separate from the time reserved for the chapel; a tightly connected appointment on arrival day leaves little room for disruption.

When should you visit Palazzo della Ragione and the squares?

Palazzo della Ragione opens Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 19:00, with last admission thirty minutes before closing. It closes on non-holiday Mondays, 25 and 26 December, 1 January and 1 May. Treat the great hall and the exterior squares as different experiences: the former court building and its painted interior deserve more attention than a quick photograph outside. The hall also offers a useful indoor focus for a wet afternoon.

Link Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta as a loop around the palace, then continue into the old central streets for lunch. Keeping the rest of that afternoon nearby is easier than returning north for another short museum stop. On Monday you can still plan an exterior walk through the squares, but travellers wanting the painted hall should reserve another day for it. Distinguish between flexible photography stops and ticketed interiors when setting your pace; they rarely take the same amount of time.

Can you combine the basilica, garden and Prato della Valle?

Yes: these three southern stops form a logical second-day itinerary. The Basilica of Saint Anthony opens at 06:15; regular weekday closing is 19:25 during daylight-saving time and 18:45 during standard time. Saturdays and holidays have their own timetable, and services should shape the timing of a sightseeing visit. A morning at the basilica followed by the botanical garden leaves a more flexible outdoor walk for the end of the day.

The university botanical garden opens in October from 10:00 to 18:00, Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays, with final admission at 17:15. From 24 October 2026, closing moves to 17:00 and last entry to 16:15. Avoid allocating an ordinary Monday to this plan. If plants and glasshouses are a particular interest, spend longer here and shorten the later square walk. Prato della Valle then provides open space after two visits that require more structured attention.

Where could you stay, and which main course should you try?

Hotel Majestic Toscanelli, at Via dell’Arco 2, is a concrete option for a stay centred on the old town. It sits within a restricted-traffic zone; the hotel records staying guests’ vehicle registrations on arrival, but this does not grant access to bus or taxi lanes. Obtain its arrival directions before driving into the centre. The location suits travellers who want dinner among the central streets rather than a return to the station area every evening; compare room size and rates for your own dates.

At Via degli Obizzi 2, Osteria dal Capo lists stewed cuttlefish with polenta as a main course, alongside Venetian-style salt cod. Ask which dishes are available that day and discuss allergens when reserving. Its published closures are Sunday, Monday lunchtime and Saturday evening. On a Saturday visit, planning lunch here is therefore more useful than saving it for dinner and having to change plans at the door. Keep another meal flexible if your chapel appointment determines the middle of the day.
