Sapporo deserves two full days between an airport arrival and a wider Hokkaido journey. Its central streets make a useful first walking route: begin around the station, visit the Clock Tower, cross Odori Park and finish with an evening in Susukino. Keep the second day for beer history and a proper meal instead of adding several distant attractions. This is a manageable introduction to the city, with enough spare time to accommodate weather. A winter photograph illustrates one season; it does not promise snow during an October visit.
Arrival and a hotel near the station
Airport services connect New Chitose Airport with JR Sapporo station. JR Hokkaido advertises a fastest journey of 37 minutes for Rapid Airport trains, although the selected service and operating conditions determine your actual trip. Add time for baggage collection, walking through the terminal and waiting. For the return journey, work backwards from your flight and leave a useful margin rather than treating the published railway journey as your complete airport transfer.

A concrete accommodation option is JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo, connected to the station. That location is particularly convenient with luggage or in poor weather. Check the chosen room category and whether breakfast or spa access is included; a panoramic promotional photograph does not describe every room. If the price exceeds your budget, use actual walking distance to the station as a comparison criterion. The accompanying station photograph is archival, from 2011, and should not be used to identify present exits.
Day one: Clock Tower and Odori Park
Start at Sapporo Clock Tower, about ten minutes on foot from the station. Going inside gives this small building more context than a quick pavement photograph. The operator's current information lists standard opening hours of 08:45–17:10, with admission ending at 17:00. An individual adult ticket costs 350 yen. It closes on January 1–3. Special evening openings have separate announcements, so use the normal daytime window when making a dependable itinerary.

Continue to Odori Park. The official tourism guide describes its east–west length as approximately 1.5 kilometres. Walk a few blocks, stop for a break and return through a different street rather than feeling obliged to cover every section. The long open space helps explain the layout of central Sapporo. This part of the visit works without a rental car, and you can shorten it when rain or cold makes a leisurely outdoor stop less appealing.
Seasonal events change the park considerably. Summer beer gardens and winter snow celebrations are reasons to check the park operator's calendar, not a guarantee that an event will be running on your dates. Leave installation areas clear and avoid blocking busy paths while taking photographs. An unhurried afternoon also leaves energy for dinner instead of turning the first day into a long endurance walk.
An evening in Susukino
Head towards Susukino as daylight fades. Its illuminated junctions and layered signs provide a different scene after Odori's open space. Treat the area as a short evening walk, allowing time to stop without holding up crossings. If you have booked dinner elsewhere, check the onward route before lingering. Return to your hotel when ready; there is no need to stretch the evening simply to make the itinerary look busier.

Day two: Sapporo Beer Museum
Build the next day around Sapporo Beer Museum. Following its July 2026 update, standard adult self-guided admission costs 1,000 yen: older descriptions of free entry are outdated. Opening hours are 11:00–18:00, with last admission at 17:30. December 31 is a closure day, and temporary closures remain possible. The Monday restriction concerns guided tours, not a blanket weekly closure of the whole museum. Self-guided visits do not require reservations; bring headphones for the smartphone audio guide.

Allow roughly an hour including arrival and pauses, even though a basic exhibition visit can take around half an hour. The interior photograph here dates from 2012 and does not represent the renovated exhibition layout. Guided tours have separate reservations and Japanese commentary. Also check the destination carefully: this museum is in Sapporo and is separate from the production facility in Eniwa. Mixing them up would change your train journey and booking.
A proper meal at Kaitakushi-kan
Book Kaitakushi-kan at Sapporo Beer Garden for jingisukan, grilled lamb. Confirm which vegetables and accompaniments your chosen menu includes. This is a full meal, independent of a museum tasting, and you need not select an alcoholic drinks package. General restaurant hours are 11:30–21:00, with last orders at 20:40; December 31 is closed. Another hall in the complex, Poplar Hall, closes for renovation from October 25, 2026 until approximately mid-January 2027, so verify the hall named in your reservation.
Weather and the journey back
The restaurant complex is about eight minutes on foot from JR Naebo station's north exit. Save your return route before dinner. In snow or ice, allow longer for short walks and wear footwear with reliable grip. Keeping an unused hour in each day makes room for shopping, a warm drink or unexpected rain. On departure morning, check railway operating information and collect your luggage before adding another outing.
