A Landshut day should be planned at two different levels: the long streets of Altstadt and Neustadt below, and Burg Trausnitz above. That distinction explains why nearby map points cannot all be visited at the same walking pace. You can explore the town before climbing to the castle, or put a booked castle visit first and eat in the centre afterwards. The uphill section is a real part of the day, not a small extension of shopping and church visits. The Stadtresidenz in town is also a different building, with a current closure that must be considered separately.

From the main station into the historic centre

Landshut (Bay) Hauptbahnhof is at Bahnhofsplatz 1. Getting off the train does not put you directly in Altstadt. Plan the additional transfer in relation to luggage and weather, and check the current local connection in your journey planner. If you walk, remember that this is the first walking block before the castle approach. Asking your hotel about luggage storage can make the central streets considerably more comfortable. A short day trip particularly benefits from resolving these details before arrival.

Choose one fixed time for the day: castle admission, a meal or the return train. Keep the rest flexible around it. An interior needs its own final-admission allowance, just as reaching the station entrance is different from being ready on the platform. In rain, the lower town walk and the uphill approach may proceed at different speeds. Calculate both rather than treating all stops as points on a flat city map. If you need step-free access or travel with a pushchair, check the relevant institution's arrangements before settling the route.

Altstadt, St Martin and the civic streets

Along Altstadt, begin by looking at the continuous façades and the long street perspective. Choose several viewpoints before concentrating on individual details. St Martin's rising brick tower helps you keep your orientation during the central walk. If the church is open for visitors, allow a quieter look inside instead of making it merely another camera stop. Worship, concerts and access restrictions have their own timing and should not be inferred from the opening hours of surrounding shops.

After the town-hall area, use a short connecting lane towards Neustadt. The names Altstadt and Neustadt do not mean that a tourist must transfer between two distant urban districts; they describe different central street experiences. You may spend longer along one and use the other chiefly as a return route. Before the castle climb, organise water and a rest. Coming back down to see the façades in another light can provide a more satisfying finish than rushing towards an additional distant sight late in the day.

Trausnitz: plan the approach and the interior

The castle's official visitor information says bulky items, including large bags and pushchairs, cannot enter the museum areas. Decide what you genuinely need before starting the approach. Allow time for the ascent, and include the return descent in the same calculation. If accessibility affects your visit, ask about the intended interior as well as reaching the courtyard. Seeing the town panorama outside and visiting every historic room do not present identical physical requirements.

Plan the guided castle visit and Kunst- und Wunderkammer according to current ticket arrangements. The operator distinguishes photography rules: photographs and video are not permitted during castle tours, while private photography without flash is treated differently in the collection. Paying attention to rooms and decoration instead of collecting phone images can enrich the experience. Once outdoors, pause for the view rather than immediately beginning the descent. Seasonal opening and final-entry times also matter; a late afternoon climb should not be assumed to leave enough time for admission.

The Stadtresidenz closure changes the centre itinerary

The Bavarian Palace Administration's Stadtresidenz visitor page currently states that construction work prevents visits until further notice. Plan an exterior look around Altstadt 79 rather than promising a tour of its halls. Visiting Trausnitz does not cancel this restriction: the two buildings have separate experiences and access conditions. If your travel date is later, check directly for a reopening announcement. A timetable copied from an old city guide is not sufficient evidence that the residence has resumed admission.

Replacing a closed interior does not require adding another long journey. You can spend more time in the civic streets, pause around St Martin or leave a more comfortable meal interval. The façade still helps explain the town's scale. Travellers whose particular interest is the residence's interior art should reserve that goal for a later visit rather than pretending an exterior photograph meets it. Knowing the distinction before the trip saves the frustration of arriving at a closed door with the rest of the afternoon already committed.

A concrete main course in Kirchgasse

Augustiner an der Sankt Martinskirche is at Kirchgasse 251. The operator's published 2025–2026 winter menu lists Kirchenteller: pork medallions with forest-mushroom cream sauce, Spätzle and fried onions. It is a real sit-down main-course example for before or after the castle, subject to confirmation for your actual date because the menu is seasonal. Pork and dairy content matter to dietary decisions. A label such as traditional cuisine does not replace checking the plate's ingredients.

The operator's current service and arrival information identifies Monday as a rest day and a reduced menu on Sundays and public holidays. Do not assume that a long Sunday afternoon walk can be followed by the same evening service as a weekday. Confirm the table and kitchen hours directly. The central address fits naturally with St Martin and a proper meal, but a substantial lunch immediately before climbing is optional. Arrange the order according to your energy and the castle booking.

Separate the hotel address from the gasthaus

The operator's room page for Hotel Freischütz gives Börmergasse 1 as the hotel address. Do not assume its entrance is identical to the gasthaus address on Neustadt. Read the arrival and reception information in your reservation, and confirm room category, parking and arrival time. An overnight stay in the centre can divide the two levels neatly: Altstadt and a meal on the first day, then Trausnitz after a night's rest. This is especially useful for travellers who want to enjoy the uphill approach without racing against the return train.
