Clearlake travel guide: Austin Park and a separate Clear Lake State Park day

The town is not the whole lake

Staying in the town of Clearlake does not put every destination around Clear Lake within a short walk of your hotel. Plan the town's Austin Park stop and the Clear Lake State Park outing near Kelseyville separately. The first can fit an arrival day, while the second deserves more transport and daylight allowance. The five genuine photographs here come from the BLM Cow Mountain regional archive. They are not pictures of Austin Park, the state park, the restaurant or the hotel. Camping, riding and motorised scenes show different regional activities without granting permission at your chosen lakeshore. Build the itinerary around open access and your own mobility needs rather than searching for an archive scene.

Keep an Austin Park stop flexible

Austin Park at 14077 Lakeshore Drive is a town stop. The municipal facility page lists a walking path, lakefront, shaded playground, picnic tables, parking and restrooms among its features. A facility list does not guarantee that every service is operating or rental equipment is available when you arrive. For event or use questions, contact 707-994-8201 extension 131. Families can establish a meeting place and choose a short circuit before separating. After a long drive, the park need not become an activity that fills the entire afternoon. Allow time simply to sit and rest, and arrange the next meal or hotel arrival around how long you actually want to remain. A short pause can be enough.

Arrange a separate trip to Clear Lake State Park

The Clear Lake State Park entrance is on Soda Bay Road, about 3.5 miles northeast of Kelseyville, rather than in central Clearlake. The official page gives sunrise-to-sunset park access and Saturday-only visitor centre hours of 10am to 2pm. Vehicle day use is listed at $8, subject to change; call 707-279-4293. Dogs may use parking areas, paved roads and campgrounds but are excluded from trails and day-use areas. Check these distinctions before travelling. A closed visitor centre does not automatically mean closed outdoor access, and open grounds do not guarantee building entry. Plan the return before sunset rather than making gate closing your target arrival time. Let the shorter daylight window shape the outing.

Give each outing its own starting point

If you continue from the town park to the state park, save the second destination separately. Searching only the shared lake name can send you to a different shore or facility. Connect the parking area, chosen walk and return direction on the map before leaving. For a first visit, a section you can shorten is easier to adapt than a long walk everyone must complete. Current signs and staff directions take priority over an older route note. Read the day's notices for waterside activities as well; a general list on a travel page is not a guarantee of current permission or conditions. Looking at the scenery briefly can still make a worthwhile stop.

A concrete main meal at Highlands Bar and Grill

Highlands Bar and Grill at 14732 Lakeshore Drive is a real Clearlake dining option. Its own main menu describes Highlands Chicken Marsala as grilled chicken breast with pepper jack cheese and a mushroom marsala brown sauce. Ask about the current vegetable and potato or rice side arrangements when ordering. Call 707-994-0441. A figure printed in a menu does not guarantee the same price or the same daily fish on your travel date. You can plan this named chicken dish as a main meal and ask staff about allergens and sauce ingredients. Leave time to organise clothing and equipment after the lake outing so that reaching the restaurant does not become a rushed final task.

Separate opening hours from dated daily specials

When checked on October 21, 2026, the homepage lists Tuesday–Thursday from 11am to 8:30pm and Friday–Saturday from 10am to 8:30pm. Do not infer Sunday or Monday opening from that list; call to confirm. The daily specials shown were dated October 20, so they should not be presented as a definite menu for the following day. The breakfast announcement concerns Friday and Saturday rather than every morning. Ask about the last kitchen order as well as closing time. Larger groups should contact the operator instead of assuming tables will be available. Anyone driving afterwards can choose drinks accordingly; a restaurant break does not need to include alcohol.

Stay at Best Western El Grande Inn

Best Western El Grande Inn is a concrete lodging option at 15135 Lakeshore Drive. Its operator listing gives 3pm check-in and 11am check-out, with free outdoor parking and an indoor pool. Contact the hotel on 707-994-2000. Ask whether breakfast is included in your selected rate rather than inferring a complimentary meal from a generic search icon. The property policy says pets are not accepted. Compare occupancy, cancellation terms and total cost for the same dates before reserving. A rate left on a screen from an earlier search is not today's quotation. If you arrive early, ask about luggage or early room access and use the answer to decide where the park stop fits in your day.

Lake Transit does not make two shores one stop

Lake Transit's current route list identifies Route 4 as the south-shore Clearlake–Lakeport connection and Route 4a as the Soda Bay service. Around town, Route 10 is named Clearlake/Clearlake Park North Loop and Route 11 The Avenues Loop. Reading route names is only the start: check the stop, direction and transfer for your travel day. Service through Soda Bay does not guarantee a direct trip to the state park gate. Solve the walking connection and the return departure separately. Hotel and restaurant addresses on the same road also do not establish that the pavement, crossings or distance suit your group. Save the return address and agree on a common meeting point if companions separate.

Put one overnight stay in a comfortable order

Combine hotel arrival and an Austin Park pause of whatever length suits you on the first day, then fit the main meal within confirmed restaurant hours. If you want the state park, give the second day its own transport and daylight allowance. Visitors interested in the Saturday visitor centre can use its 10am–2pm window to anchor the plan. On other days, assess outdoor access from current information without promising a building visit. Pack water, comfortable shoes, clothing for conditions and a charged phone. If tiredness changes your plans, you need not complete both parks. Resting longer at one stop can be more practical than rushing through a checklist. Write hotel check-out and the onward journey explicitly into the itinerary.
