Separate town culture from a mountain excursion
Plan an overnight stay in Ukiah around museum and meal stops in town, followed by a separate Cow Mountain excursion if conditions suit. A short gallery visit and a rural trail require different transportation and preparation. The BLM photographs selected for this guide come from the Cow Mountain Recreation Area archive, not from Grace Hudson Museum, the hotel or downtown. North and south management areas have different rules. A historical picture of motorised riding is not permission to do the same in the north. Let museum hours anchor the first day, and let open access and weather determine the length of the second. That leaves room to enjoy both experiences.

Choose an operating day for Grace Hudson Museum
Grace Hudson Museum at 431 South Main Street opens Wednesday through Saturday from 10am to 4:30pm and Sunday from noon to 4:30pm, closing Monday and Tuesday. Its official page lists first-Friday evening hours of 5pm to 8pm. An ordinary Friday is not automatically a first-Friday event. Listed admission is $7 for an individual, $5 for students and seniors and $15 for families, with free admission for everyone on the first Friday. Check eligibility and charges at entry. Start with enough time to read gallery labels instead of arriving just before closing. If companions explore at different speeds, agree on a meeting point rather than trying to finish every display together.
A Sun House tour is a separate question
The institution's core galleries address Grace Hudson's art, Carpenter-Hudson family history and Pomo basketry. Guided Sun House tours are generally offered Friday through Sunday between noon and 3pm, and the museum asks visitors to confirm availability on 707-467-2836. Open galleries do not guarantee a house tour at a particular hour. Ask about the tour first, then divide your remaining museum time accordingly. Reading titles and labels and selecting a few details to examine can make the visit more rewarding than a quick photographic circuit. Ask staff about photography and reproduction rules; public-domain landscape images in this guide do not automatically grant permission to reproduce museum artworks.

A proper main meal at Ukiah Brewing Company
Ukiah Brewing Company & Restaurant at 102 South State Street is a concrete meal stop for the town day. Its September 4, 2026 menu describes the Creekstone Farms Beef Burger with brioche, bacon jam, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, white cheddar and Bruha sauce. Confirm availability and any ingredient changes when ordering; an amount in a menu file is not an unchanging quotation. Call 707-468-5898. The homepage lists Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11:30am to 9pm, weekends from 11am to 9pm, and Wednesday from 5pm to 9pm only. Do not assume it will provide Wednesday lunch after the museum. Explain allergies and cooking preferences directly when ordering, and let the driver's return plan guide drink choices.
Stay at Hampton Inn Ukiah
Hampton Inn Ukiah is a real lodging option at 1160 Airport Park Boulevard. Its official page lists 3pm check-in, 11am check-out, free hot breakfast, WiFi and parking, plus an outdoor pool. EV charging and airport shuttle service are unavailable. Contact the hotel on 707-462-6555. Compare room prices using the same cancellation conditions and sleeping arrangement. Do not assume immediate room access if you arrive early; ask separately about luggage or early check-in. Change the order of your town stops according to arrival time so that hotel formalities do not interrupt the museum visit. If a nature outing follows the next day, check breakfast hours and prepare water and equipment the evening before. An included service need not suit every departure time.

Prepare separately for North Cow Mountain
BLM describes North Cow Mountain east of Ukiah as a recreation area without off-highway vehicle use. Its directions follow the Talmage exit, Talmage Road, East Side Road and Mill Creek Road; use the current map and signs. No potable water is available. Do not apply the same entrance arrangements or activity rules to North Cow Mountain and the South Cow Mountain OHV area. For a walk, identify your starting point, where your vehicle can turn around and the return time before leaving town. Saving a map is useful but does not overrule a sign or barrier. Pack water without relying on replenishing it from a natural source. A mountain visit should not be a rushed extra stop after gallery closing.
Let current BLM alerts shape the route
On October 21, 2026, the BLM page reports fallen trees and washouts on Glen Eden and Valley View trails and asks visitors not to leave the trail when blocked. It also displays a June 5, 2026 fire-prevention update prohibiting target shooting and temporarily closing the shooting range. Do not infer the opposite from archive photographs or older general activity lists. Contact the Ukiah Field Office on 707-468-4000 for current restrictions and access. Shortening the walk to suit the least comfortable participant is a reasonable decision. Avoid unmarked slopes when looking for a way around a damaged or closed section. If you cannot identify a suitable open route, give the town day more time instead.

Solve rural transport separately from town buses
Mendocino Transit Authority's current schedules identify Route 9 as Ukiah Local, while Route 20 links Willits, Mendocino College and Ukiah. Check travel day, direction and connections together. Service to Ukiah does not mean a direct bus reaches the Cow Mountain entrance. Arrange rural transportation separately and solve the return before starting the walk. Even when town travel between the museum and restaurant seems straightforward, include the final departure and the walk from the stop to your destination. Companions who separate should save the same meeting address. An old printed departure time or another person's previous journey cannot replace the schedule for your own travel day.
Keep the two-day order flexible
Choose museum opening hours for the first day, confirm a Sun House tour and place the main meal within the restaurant's schedule for that weekday. Hotel check-in is after 3pm, leaving the evening for next-day preparation. On the second, choose a short mountain route only if agency information, weather and transport allow it. An archived tent or riding scene does not grant camping or motorised access at that exact place. Use the pictures to understand different recreational settings in the wider area. Prepare water, clothing for sun and wind, comfortable footwear and a charged phone. Avoid adding a distant extra stop when the return time approaches. Culture and nature can complement each other without making either day exhausting.
