Two days in Ljubljana, between the bridges and castle

Ljubljana is easy to begin exploring along the river and then understand from a different angle on Castle Hill. Give your first day to the Triple Bridge, market and old centre, followed by the castle and longer breaks on the second. The order can change if you arrive early, but keep the market’s operating times in mind. On a wet day, divide the waterfront into shorter walks with indoor stops between them. Staying two nights gives you the chance to return over the bridges in evening light without immediately leaving the city. Allow room to revisit a stretch of river you particularly enjoy instead of filling every spare hour with another attraction. Familiarity is part of the pleasure of a compact city break.

Arriving from the airport

The airport operator’s 2026 passenger-access information distinguishes regular buses, shuttle transfers and taxis, and places the bus stop in front of Terminal A. Check the service and destination stop for your own travel date. An aircraft’s arrival time is not the time you will be ready to board ground transport, especially with checked luggage. If landing late, establish the final connection in advance. Once you reach your accommodation, leave the bags before taking a short introductory walk towards the river. For the return journey, allow separately for leaving the hotel, reaching the terminal and completing departure formalities. A previous quick transfer is useful experience, but it should not become a fixed expectation for every travel day.

Crossing the Triple Bridge into the old centre

The Triple Bridge is a practical place to understand the two riverbanks and the directions through the centre. Cross one section and return by another to see how the view shifts over a short distance. For photographs, choose a spot on the embankment rather than waiting in the narrowest pedestrian flow. Continue into the old-town squares and smaller streets, looking up at the facades around Mestni trg. A route that seems like one simple line on a map becomes more interesting when you slow down. Have coffee here or beside the river, leaving the hill for the following morning. If companions want to browse different shops, agree on a particular bridge as a meeting point before separating.

Give the Central Market a morning slot

Market operator LPT lists the covered market at Pogačarjev trg 1 and the indoor section in Plečnik’s arcades as open Monday to Friday, 07:00–16:00, and Saturday, 07:00–14:00. These hours do not describe every outdoor stall or waterfront shop: the different market sections have separate schedules. In particular, do not base a Sunday shopping plan on the covered halls being available. Visit in the morning and leave the afternoon for walking. If buying food to take away, ask about portion size and storage, especially if it will remain in your bag through the rest of the day. A seated pause nearby also gives you time to observe the market as part of everyday city life.

The Dragon Bridge and a riverside return

The Dragon Bridge provides a second clear destination for the first day. Look closely at its sculptural details, then step back along the embankment for the whole bridge and its surroundings. These are different views, so there is no need to collect them from one crowded position. Following the river back towards the centre creates a gentle loop instead of retracing every street. When it rains, alternate exposed bridge sections with more sheltered stops. Before dinner, sitting beside the water may be more appealing than adding another long walk. Notice which bank offers the simplest return towards your hotel. Revisiting the waterfront at an easy pace also improves your sense of direction for the remaining day.

The castle and funicular close at different times

The castle’s current timetable lists October to April funicular hours of 09:00–19:00 and castle hours of 09:00–18:00. From May to September, these become 09:00–22:00 and 09:00–20:00 respectively. Ticket purchases finish an hour before the castle closes. Special year-end hours apply: both close at 17:00 on 31 December and open at 10:00 on 1 January. A later funicular does not mean that exhibitions remain open. Check what your chosen ticket covers and leave separate time for views and indoor visits. If walking up, consider the surface and forecast, and remember that the descent is part of the outing too. Choose a window that allows you to look across the city without watching the clock.

Planning a stay at Hotel CUBO

Hotel CUBO is a real Ljubljana accommodation option to investigate for this itinerary. Compare the actual room category, breakfast arrangements and cancellation terms, not just the promotional photographs. A central stay can make it easier to include a short rest between walks. Check the route from the hotel to the river separately from the next day’s climb: a level city walk and a hill visit require different amounts of effort. Let the property know about late arrival or luggage-storage needs in advance. If driving, ask about parking and consider exploring the centre on foot after arrival. Where a particular outlook or service matters to you, have it confirmed against the room and rate you intend to reserve.

A sausage main meal at Gostilna Sokol

Gostilna Sokol’s own traditional menu includes Kranjska klobasa with sauerkraut and sautéed potatoes. At Ciril Metodov trg 18, this gives you a specific sit-down main meal after the market and old-town walk. The restaurant publishes daily opening from 07:00 to 23:00, but ask whether the main kitchen is serving at your intended time. Its booking notice also says that a request is not confirmed until the restaurant contacts you. Discuss portions and allergens before ordering, and check alternatives on the menu if the dish does not suit your preferences. Leave time for a short riverside walk after dinner. On your final morning, a calm breakfast and transfer can be a better ending than another rushed appointment.
