How many days do you need in Porto?

Allow two full days for Porto: spend the first around Aliados, Clérigos and Ribeira, then use the second for Bolhão, a booked bookshop visit and the Gaia side of the Douro. This arrangement groups the sights by level, reducing repeated climbs between the river and the upper centre. With one day, prioritise the walk down to Ribeira over fitting in both the market and a lengthy Livraria Lello visit. A third day gives you space for a separate coastal or museum outing. Porto becomes much more demanding if you plan it as an entirely flat riverside city.

The visiting information was checked against official and operator pages on 9 October 2026. If your trip includes Sunday, move Bolhão and Café Santiago to another day. Treat a timed Lello booking as a fixed appointment and keep the unstructured river walk away from the hour immediately before it. Returning uphill from the waterfront can require more effort than a short distance on the map suggests. Decide where you want to finish the day before choosing how far downhill to walk.

Which metro connects Porto Airport with the city?

The airport's official transport page identifies the purple E line as the metro connection. Select your stop and any transfer from the current network information using the hotel's full address. Trindade and Ribeira are not interchangeable arrival points. If you have a large suitcase, the hotel's recommended final connection may be easier than walking downhill over paving and steps. For a late arrival, compare your flight time with that day's last services instead of relying on an assumed frequency.

Andante's instructions require validation before a journey and when changing lines or transport. Choose the appropriate zones for the route. An airport journey and a short central hop do not automatically require the same fare product. At Trindade, check the direction of the next platform when transferring; the train you arrived on should not be assumed to serve every stop in the historic centre. A direct metro journey to an interchange is only part of the route to a riverside hotel.

How do you walk from Aliados to Ribeira?

Begin around Aliados and head to Clérigos, completing your main upper-centre visit before descending towards the river. The operator's normal visiting hours are 09:00–19:00, with final admission 30 minutes before closing. Extended night visits are seasonal; Christmas and New Year also have exceptions. Check the date-specific information and what your ticket covers. The accessible multisensory experience described by the operator simulates the tower view; it should not be understood as a lift to the physical viewing platform.

Afterwards, continue through the São Bento area and Rua das Flores towards Ribeira. This gives the afternoon a downhill direction and avoids scheduling another tower climb after reaching the quay. Spend time looking at the waterfront facades and the river traffic before committing to another activity. If choosing a boat trip, confirm whether it departs from Porto or Gaia: a meeting point on the opposite bank changes both the walking route and the time needed to get there. Keep lunch or a café stop on the route rather than returning to Aliados midway through the descent.

Which bridge level works for Gaia and the views?

The upper and lower crossings of Luís I Bridge are different walking routes. Portugal's official accessible-tour guide describes crossing the upper deck to Gaia and the steep streets or steps involved in reaching the riverbank below. From Ribeira, decide whether you want to remain at waterfront level or reach the higher viewpoints. Use the marked pedestrian areas on the bridge and avoid stopping across the walking line for photographs.

Jardim do Morro is in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from Porto. Combine it with the upper bridge crossing if seeing Porto's skyline from the opposite bank is a priority. The official tourism listing for the Gaia cable car describes the connection between the quay and the upper station near Jardim do Morro. If that option matters to your route, check its operating status and ticket conditions for the day. Waiting for sunset works best when dinner and the return journey are already decided, especially if you want to avoid an unfamiliar stair route after dark.

Can you combine Bolhão Market and Livraria Lello?

Start the second morning at Bolhão Market. The market opens Monday–Friday 08:00–20:00 and Saturday 08:00–18:00, closing on Sundays and holidays. Restaurant hours extend later, which does not mean every fresh-food stall stays open at night. Choose a morning visit for browsing the stalls, and confirm the individual restaurant if returning for a later meal. Accessible entrances and lifts serve the building; the surrounding street gradients remain a separate consideration.

Fit Livraria Lello around a reserved entry slot. The current homepage displays 09:00–19:30, while some ticket information has shown an earlier closing time; your confirmed date and slot are the practical basis for a visit. The bookshop says the ticket value can be used towards a book, so read the conditions of the particular voucher before buying. An exterior look and a substantial visit inside are different choices. If the interior is a priority, avoid placing a tower or lunch reservation immediately afterwards.

Where should you stay, and where can you eat francesinha?

Pestana Porto – A Brasileira, at Rua de Sá da Bandeira 91, is a central hotel that fits a route starting around Aliados and São Bento. It is not a Ribeira waterfront property, a useful distinction if river-level access matters more than proximity to the upper centre. Compare the room category, breakfast and cancellation terms for matching dates. If arriving by car, ask the hotel about the drop-off point and parking arrangements rather than assuming its central address includes convenient street parking.

For a substantial meal, Café Santiago at Rua Passos Manuel 226 serves Francesinha Santiago, combining steak and other meats with cheese, egg and hot sauce. Published opening hours are Monday–Saturday 12:00–22:45; Sunday is closed. Confirm the kitchen's final ordering time separately. Discuss pork, dairy, egg or gluten restrictions before ordering. Choosing this meal after Bolhão keeps lunch in the upper centre instead of adding another climb from the river.

For a two-city Portugal trip, plan a separate stay and walking days in the capital with the Lisbon travel guide.
