Yokohama travel guide: two days by the bay and at Sankeien

Two days in Yokohama create a useful balance between a modern waterfront and a historic garden. Spend the first around Minato Mirai and Shinko, combining a walk, a museum and a proper restaurant meal; reserve the second morning for Sankeien. This keeps the garden from becoming a hurried stop between city-centre buildings. You do not need to climb every tower or visit every museum. A few well-chosen places, time beside the water and a sensible transfer margin make a more comfortable introduction.

Arrival and a hotel: choose the right station

Distinguish Yokohama, Shin-Yokohama, Sakuragicho and Bashamichi when checking bookings and directions. Your bullet train arrival and waterfront hotel may be in different parts of the city. Allow for the final walk with luggage: finding exits and crossing roads can lengthen a connection that looks short on a map. Begin sightseeing after leaving your bags somewhere suitable. If rain develops, move the open waterfront section later instead of forcing the original order.

A concrete hotel option is InterContinental Yokohama Pier 8, connected to the Shinko passenger terminal. Its operator gives about ten minutes on foot from Bashamichi Exit 4 or fifteen from Sakuragicho. The entrance is on the right side of Yokohama Hammerhead's main entrance. Match “Pier 8” carefully because the city has another InterContinental property. Check room orientation, breakfast and cancellation terms in your chosen rate; a waterfront address does not promise the same view from every room.

First morning: the Minato Mirai waterfront

Use the first walk to understand the waterfront rather than checking off individual skyscrapers. Walk for a while and look back: buildings that merge from a distance resolve into separate areas as you approach. After taking in the view around the Ferris wheel, continue through Shinko. Shorten or extend the walk around your museum booking. Leaving bags at the hotel first makes it easier to enjoy the bridges and waterfront paths without dragging luggage between stops.

Build coffee and rest stops into the route. Wind beside open water can feel different from conditions on sheltered streets, so bring a suitable extra layer. Families may find it helpful to identify the next indoor stop before setting off. Instead of purchasing several viewpoints, spend time at a waterfront angle you enjoy. Returning after dark gives a different view without needing to travel to another district.

CUPNOODLES MUSEUM: admission is not a workshop booking

CUPNOODLES MUSEUM YOKOHAMA normally opens 10:00–18:00, with last admission at 17:00. It closes Tuesdays, or the following day when Tuesday is a national holiday, plus year-end holidays. Chicken Ramen Factory requires reservations; My CUPNOODLES Factory requires a numbered ticket. Museum entry therefore does not guarantee your preferred activity. The operator also warns of school-group crowds on 14–16 October 2026. Check the calendar for your actual date rather than relying exclusively on the normal weekly pattern.

If a workshop is unavailable, keep your exhibition time and continue to lunch as planned. Separating the museum visit from your main meal reduces the chance of hunger and queues dictating the whole afternoon. Confirm that you are looking at the Yokohama branch: the same organisation also operates a museum in Osaka Ikeda. Choose activities before paying, then leave enough time to enjoy what you have actually booked.

A main meal: Yokohama beef sirloin at Larboard

Larboard, on Pier 8's second floor, serves lunch 11:30–15:00, with last orders at 14:00, and requests smart casual clothing. The menu dated 3 September 2026 offers pan-fried Yokohama beef sirloin with grilled vegetables and chimichurri sauce. Ask about sauce and accompaniment ingredients when booking if you have allergies. Confirm price and availability too; the menu states that a fifteen-percent service charge applies.

An afternoon around the Red Brick Warehouse

The Red Brick Warehouse combines waterfront surroundings with shops and exhibition spaces. Buildings one and two have different functions and opening arrangements, while restaurants may keep their own hours. Events can change the atmosphere and movement through the square. If a festival matters to your visit, check a dated announcement rather than treating an older poster as evidence of this year's programme.

Second morning: Sankeien's garden paths

Sankeien opens 09:00–17:00, with last entry at 16:30, and closes 26–31 December. Standard adult admission is 900 yen. The operator estimates about thirty minutes walking from Negishi Station, or ten minutes by bus or taxi, before any waiting time. This is a separate outing from the central waterfront. Starting in the morning and leaving the afternoon flexible makes transport and unhurried garden stops easier to combine.

Historic details and an unhurried departure

Look at how bridges and historic structures relate to their surroundings, not only the broad garden panorama. Do not assume every building is open inside; outdoor access and interior admission can have different rules. The photographs are from earlier years and show planting at the time they were taken. Allow separately for collecting luggage, reaching the station and finding your platform. Leave the final half hour free instead of inserting one more attraction before your departure.
