Ingolstadt combines a Danube-side old town with an industrial identity that deserves a visit of its own. Start by deciding how much attention you want to give each. The old centre works well as a walk between gates, squares and the castle, while Audi museum mobile needs time for both travel and its collection. Trying to squeeze the latter into a spare hour after lunch can make the day feel hurried. With two days, you can separate the historic walk from the automotive visit and leave room for the river.

Arriving by train

Do not assume that Ingolstadt Hauptbahnhof and the old-town centre are the same destination. Check the current connection between your arrival station and your accommodation or first walking stop. Leave luggage before sightseeing if you are staying overnight. If your train also serves Ingolstadt Nord, compare its location with your hotel instead of assuming every service makes the same stops. Give yourself time to return to the departure station after the last attraction. Agreeing on a clear meeting point also helps if members of your group want to spend different lengths of time in a museum.

From Kreuztor into the old centre

Begin with an exterior look at Kreuztor and continue into the surrounding streets. The association caring for the gate explains that interiors open through exhibitions and events; it is better to check the programme than to treat the building as an everyday museum. Continue towards Rathausplatz and pause at the edge of the square before choosing your next street. Smaller passages and courtyards can be just as rewarding as the headline monuments. Leave entrances clear when photographing facades, and respect services if you step into a church. A modest circuit gives you a sense of the town without requiring a visit inside every building.

Neues Schloss and the museum decision

Neues Schloss beside Paradeplatz adds a larger historical stop to the walk. The Bavarian Army Museum visitor page lists Paradeplatz 4 as the main address. It also announces a closure of Neues Schloss on 8 October 2026 for an event, while the other museum buildings remain open. Different buildings are distinct visits, so check which admission you are buying. Looking at the castle exterior can be worthwhile even if you do not enter a collection. If you do go inside, choose the period or exhibition you most want to understand and give it a proper place in the day rather than treating it as a brief detour.

The Danube and a green interval

After the central facades, head towards the river to change the pace of the visit. Find a point where you can look across the water and connect the opposite bank with the old town behind you. This section need not become a long-distance walking route. A short stretch after lunch may be enough. Include the return when planning a bridge crossing, especially if you are working towards a train departure. On a windy day, shorten your time on the exposed bank and return through a more sheltered street. Choose between the Klenzepark and Glacis directions according to your interests and the walking energy left in your group.

Give Audi museum mobile its own slot

The current Audi museum mobile exhibition page sets out the automotive-history visit. Its information dated 1 October 2026 lists Monday closure, Tuesday–Friday hours of 9 am–5 pm and weekend or holiday hours of 10 am–4 pm, with exceptions on certain dates. Check your chosen day. Museum admission and a factory tour are different arrangements. If your interest in cars is casual, focus on changes in design rather than attempting to absorb every label. With children, start with the area that most catches their attention, leaving flexibility to shorten the visit when tiredness begins.

A full meal at Weissbräuhaus

Weissbräuhaus, at Dollstraße 3, provides a concrete meal stop in the centre. The summer 2025 menu still linked from the operator's page includes Allgäuer Käsespätzle with braised onions and a side salad. This is a substantial cheese-and-noodle main course rather than a coffee break presented as lunch. Consult the current menu at the restaurant instead of budgeting from an older file's prices. A relaxed meal in the middle of the walking day can work better than eating heavily just before a museum visit. Ask the staff about alternatives if the dish does not suit your preferences.

Staying in the old town

The operator's Altstadthotel Ingolstadt contact page gives Gymnasiumstraße 9 for the hotel and neighbouring Guesthouse Die Galerie. This is worth considering for a trip built around the historic centre. Specify which building you are booking: a shared website does not mean that every room has identical arrangements. Confirm breakfast, parking and late-arrival conditions where relevant. Even if Audi is the main reason for your trip, consider whether you would prefer to spend the evening walking through the old town. After checking in, a short first circuit can be more enjoyable than trying to finish the entire sightseeing list immediately.

One day or a slower two-day visit

For a first day, Kreuztor, Rathausplatz, Paradeplatz and the Danube provide a useful backbone. Add one substantial museum visit, chosen according to your interests. With an overnight stay, keep the old centre and castle for the first day and reserve the following morning for Audi museum mobile. If rain reduces the outdoor section, transfer that time to a collection you want to see. On Monday or a special closure date, put the exterior walk first. A final cafe stop can give you time to take stock before departure. Leaving one attraction for another visit is often a better choice than rushing the last hour.
