A rewarding first visit to Hangzhou starts with a manageable stretch of lakeside walking. Instead of trying to cover every attraction in one day, give West Lake several different moments: a morning beside the water, an afternoon around Gushan and a return after dinner. Three days allow one day for the eastern and northern shores, one for Lingyin and Feilai Peak, and one for silk culture and the southern shore. With two days, shorten the final section rather than combining a major temple visit with an ambitious circuit of the entire lake.
West Lake: begin with one stretch of shoreline
West Lake, also called Xihu, provides a useful centre for your itinerary. Its UNESCO-listed cultural landscape includes the relationship between water, paths, gardens and surrounding hills. Start around Hubin and choose a walk towards the northern shore. The purpose of the first outing is to understand the setting, not to complete a distance target. A route that appears short on a map can take much longer once you allow for photographs, a meal and time simply looking across the water.

Leave large luggage at your accommodation before starting. Carry drinking water, a light rain layer and a charged phone, keeping the bag comfortable enough for a longer walk if you decide to continue. A boat trip is an optional experience rather than a requirement for enjoying the lake. Before paying, establish whether the ticket covers a single journey or a return, and identify the landing point. A beautiful crossing is less convenient if it leaves you far from the next stop without enough time to return.
Bai Causeway and a relaxed afternoon around Gushan
Continue the northern shoreline outing towards Bai Causeway and Gushan if your energy and the weather allow. Give this section time for small detours and different views rather than treating it as a transfer between photographs. The Zhejiang Provincial Museum building at Gushan is part of the area's cultural setting. Its photograph is not evidence that a particular exhibition currently operates there. If a specific collection is the reason for your visit, check which museum site houses it before travelling; do not assume every collection remains in the building shown.

For families, an outward walk with a simple return can be easier than a long loop. Decide on a comfortable turnaround point and leave the rest for another visit. Keep narrow paths clear while taking photographs and choose a stopping place away from the main flow of pedestrians. If you visit after lunch, allow an unhurried journey back before dinner. Changing the plan because someone is tired is a sensible adjustment, especially when another full day of sightseeing follows.
Reserve your Lingyin and Feilai Peak visit first
Use the second day for Lingyin and the Feilai Peak scenic area. Hangzhou's official announcement states that free admission began on 1 December 2025, including Lingyin and the other temples named in the announcement. Entry uses real-name reservations for specific time slots. Free admission therefore does not mean unrestricted entry at any time. Check the current booking process before your travel date and plan transport around the slot you actually obtain. Older guidebook admission prices should not be treated as your confirmed cost.
Wear shoes suitable for walking and avoid carrying heavy purchases through the visit. Follow local directions around worship spaces, and check photography signs in each area rather than assuming one rule applies everywhere. Give the surroundings enough time instead of adding a distant attraction simply because it fits on a list. A short rest at the hotel afterwards can make the evening more enjoyable and allows dinner to remain a proper meal rather than something rushed between transfers.
The southern shore, Leifeng and silk culture
Keep the southern shoreline as a separate part of your third day. Seeing Leifeng Pagoda in its lakeside setting and buying entry to explore it are different choices. Check the current official admission information before deciding on an interior visit. You can also combine this part of the city with the China National Silk Museum. A museum visit gives the itinerary an indoor cultural element and offers a different focus from scenery. Keep time for learning about silk separate from any shopping you intend to do.

The museum's published visitor page lists Tuesday to Sunday opening from 09:00 to 17:00 and Monday opening from 12:00 to 17:00, with a different arrangement for national holidays. Recheck current notices, particularly before planning a Monday morning visit. Arriving shortly before closing leaves little room for the galleries, so set aside a comfortable visiting window. In wet weather, moving the museum earlier in the day may help, provided the day's admission and opening arrangements support that change.
A specific hotel and a substantial dinner
Grand Hyatt Hangzhou is a concrete accommodation option at 28 Hu Bin Road on the eastern side of West Lake. Evaluate it in relation to your Hubin walks and evening return. When booking, check whether a lake view is included in the exact room category, together with breakfast and cancellation conditions. Apply the same approach when comparing a less expensive hotel: the useful question is how its location fits your daily route, rather than whether its name sounds close to a famous attraction.
The hotel's 28 HuBin Road restaurant provides a specific dinner option. Its official dining information identifies Beggar’s Chicken as a signature dish. Ask how many people the portion serves, then choose suitable rice and vegetable accompaniments to make a complete meal. Confirm availability, preparation time and dietary requirements with the restaurant when reserving. A tea break can be enjoyable, but keep it separate from the main meal after a long day of walking. Allow enough time to sit down and eat without watching the clock for another attraction.
An evening return and a practical daily budget
Returning to the lake after dinner allows you to experience a familiar setting in different light. Do not interpret historic night photographs as a promise of a scheduled show or identical lighting every evening. Save your accommodation location and a straightforward return route before heading out. Keep enough phone battery for navigation. Divide the daily budget into accommodation, main meals, transport and optional admissions, so a boat ride or paid interior visit becomes a clear choice. A good Hangzhou itinerary leaves breathing room between these decisions rather than filling every available hour.
