Two days in Granada, between the palace hill and the Darro

Build a first visit to Granada around the timed entry on your Alhambra ticket, then give the surrounding city a separate day. This creates a comfortable rhythm: palaces, courtyards and gardens on one day, followed by Plaza Nueva, the Darro and the Albaicín on another. Staying for two nights helps avoid carrying luggage or watching a departure deadline throughout the palace visit. If you arrive by air, leave a generous gap before any fixed booking. The suggested walks below can change order to suit your ticket and the weather. Granada rewards pauses as much as movement; a shaded courtyard, a riverside coffee and an unhurried dinner belong in the itinerary alongside its famous views.

Arriving from the airport and managing the hills

Aena’s Granada-Jaén airport page lists the bus connection to the city centre. Check the departure stop and timetable for your travel day, and allow separately for the final journey to your accommodation. A current, date-specific notice concerns Saturday 10 October 2026: between 18:30 and 20:30, the route of line 245 in the Granada-to-airport direction changes because of a demonstration. If this matches your departure, confirm the appropriate boarding point before setting out. Once in town, a central walk is an easy introduction, but the climbs towards the Albaicín and Alhambra deserve planning. Avoid putting both long uphill walks into the same afternoon simply because their starting points appear close on a map.

Understanding your Alhambra ticket

The official Alhambra General ticket covers the Alcazaba, Nasrid Palaces and Generalife. Entry to the Nasrid Palaces follows the particular time printed on your ticket. That appointment is different from the general opening time of the complex. Bring the original identity document used for the booking, and check the names of everyone travelling. Downloading the tickets before leaving your accommodation makes them easier to produce without relying on a connection. Study the access point and the walk to the palace entrance in advance: reaching the bottom of the hill does not mean you have arrived for your appointment. If your preferred date is unavailable, consider changing the itinerary rather than assuming that a gardens-only product includes the palaces.

The Alcazaba, courtyards and seasonal opening times

The Patronato’s published daytime hours run from 08:30 to 20:00 between 1 April and 14 October, and from 08:30 to 18:00 between 15 October and 31 March. The complex closes on 25 December and 1 January. This matters particularly for an October trip that crosses the seasonal boundary. Give the open spaces of the Alcazaba and the decorated palace courtyards different amounts of attention, with time to pause between them. In the Court of the Lions, look beyond a single photograph towards the relationship between columns, shade and water. Walking distances accumulate throughout the visit, so comfortable shoes and preparation for the forecast can make the later garden sections considerably more enjoyable.

From Plaza Nueva along the Carrera del Darro

Start the following morning at Plaza Nueva, looking at the exterior of the Real Chancillería before continuing along the Carrera del Darro. The city describes this as one of Granada’s oldest and most visited streets. Its narrow riverside setting encourages a slower pace. When stopping for a photograph, leave room for people passing instead of gathering in the tightest part of the route. Continuing towards the Paseo de los Tristes gives a different sense of the Alhambra, now seen from below. Allow a seated break rather than treating the whole morning as a continuous march. The river’s appearance changes with the season; an older summer photograph is useful for recognising the setting, not for predicting water levels during your stay.

Climbing into the Albaicín for San Nicolás

The San Nicolás viewpoint makes a clear destination for the second day, facing the Alhambra from the opposite hill. Before starting the climb from the riverside, consider the temperature and your energy. Moving it to a cooler part of the day may be more pleasant than pressing on immediately after lunch. Small squares and doorways make the approach interesting in its own right, so avoid concentrating entirely on the final panorama. A sunset visit needs space afterwards for the descent and departure from the crowds before dinner. Morning works equally well for travellers who prefer an earlier finish. Keep voices low in residential lanes and leave entrances clear while waiting for companions or taking photographs.

A real hotel option and a quieter architectural detail

Hotel Casa 1800 Granada is an identifiable boutique option for a city stay. Its room information lists 25 rooms across six categories, so compare the specific room being offered rather than expecting every space to have the same outlook or layout. Ask about luggage access, steps and any mobility requirements before booking. A central base can simplify the Darro walk, but the journey to an Alhambra appointment still needs its own time allowance. During the palace-hill day, the bell tower associated with the former San Francisco convent, now the Parador, offers a smaller architectural detail between the major sights. Leave a little unscheduled time here instead of adding another fixed appointment immediately after the palace visit.

A main meal at Chikito and an easy final morning

For a substantial meal, Chikito’s own menu lists rabo de toro among its meat dishes. The restaurant is at Plaza del Campillo 9 and publishes kitchen hours of 13:00–16:00 and 20:00–23:30, with Wednesday closure. Reserve a suitable time and ask about availability, portion size and allergens. A leisurely lunch leaves less reason to rush into a steep afternoon climb, while dinner works well after allowing enough time to return from San Nicolás. On departure morning, a short breakfast and a calm transfer can be preferable to squeezing in another major attraction. Before leaving the hotel, check your documents, tickets and the current airport-bus information, particularly if your travel coincides with the dated diversion notice.
