Two days in Catania: squares and the monastery
For a short visit, spend day one around Piazza del Duomo, Via Crociferi and the Roman Theatre, then build day two around the Benedictine Monastery and Via Etnea. This combines independent walking with a reserved interior visit. If you want a coastline excursion or a trip to Etna, give it a separate day. Inserting a lengthy mountain journey into this city itinerary would leave little time for the places along the way. A first visit works best when you can appreciate the different settings of squares, streets and interiors without trying to reach every museum. On a late arrival, start with a short square walk and leave the full route for the next morning.

Airport transport and the right ticket
AMTS operates Alibus as an airport–centre connection. At the 9 October 2026 check, its published fare was €4, including a total of 90 minutes on AMT urban routes. Ordinary city tickets and passes do not work in the reverse direction as Alibus tickets. The operator lists payment on the bus by cash or card, its app and authorised outlets. Check the current route map for the stop that suits your hotel. Allow time for baggage collection and waiting, rather than booking a monastery tour immediately after your flight. Include the walk from the hotel to the departure stop when planning your return.
Piazza del Duomo and Sant’Agata
Begin your first morning by looking at the cathedral façade and Elephant Fountain together. The dark elephant is a city symbol, and its contrast with the lighter cathedral façade gives the square a distinctive character. Bellini's tomb is inside the cathedral. Check the actual visiting and worship arrangements before entering; access to the church differs from walking across the square. Pause at an edge of the piazza to study details rather than only taking a photograph while moving. If meeting someone here, choose a specific visible corner instead of simply saying “in front of the cathedral,” which can be confusing when the square is busy.

A short walk along Via Crociferi
Approach Via Crociferi from Piazza San Francesco d’Assisi. Italy's national tourism portal describes this architectural street as roughly 400 metres long, with the San Benedetto arch and a succession of religious buildings. You do not need to enter every church for the walk to be rewarding. Choose an open interior that particularly interests you and view other façades from the street. Consider the slopes and paving in relation to your own mobility. If lunch is booked, leave time for the return route as well. Several short stops to compare stonework and proportions can make this small section of the city more memorable than a hurried passage through it.
The Roman Theatre and Odeon
The Roman Theatre and Odeon are at Via Vittorio Emanuele 266. The regional archaeological park currently lists daily opening from 9am to 7pm, with last admission at 6:30pm; its full ticket is €8. This is a different entrance and site from the amphitheatre at Piazza Stesicoro. Fit the visit around the day's temperature and the amount of walking you have already done. Look at the relationship between the seating and the surrounding city, rather than treating the stop simply as a photograph. Check park notices for temporary arrangements or events before coming. Last admission does not indicate how much time you should allow for an unhurried visit.

Reserve the Benedictine Monastery visit
Day two can centre on Monastero dei Benedettini at Piazza Dante 32. The operator runs guided visits daily between 10am and 5pm and requires a booking. English tours have a separate booking link, so choose the language explicitly. During university opening hours, free access is limited to areas used by students; the broader interior route requires the guided visit. Leave a short rest before the tour instead of filling every earlier hour with additional stops. Discuss language or mobility needs when arranging admission, so you understand what the experience will involve. Keep the booking confirmation available and allow a margin for finding the meeting point.

Bellini Square in the evening
Piazza Vincenzo Bellini offers another short outdoor stop. Looking at its fountain and surrounding façades does not require a performance ticket, but touring the theatre interior is a separate activity. Teatro Massimo Bellini's official page states that guided tours are suspended because of fire-safety upgrade work. Do not build the daytime route around a guaranteed interior tour. If you would like to attend a performance, check that event's schedule and admission conditions independently. A short walk here before dinner introduces a more flexible part of the day after the larger monuments. Save your hotel address and the route back before setting out again.

Staying at Palace Catania
Palace Catania UNA Esperienze is a specific accommodation option at Via Etnea 218. It publishes check-in after 2pm and check-out before noon. A central base can be useful for returning to rest before an evening walk. Drivers should ask about the private garage and arrival route in advance, including any separate charges. Compare the room category, breakfast arrangements and cancellation conditions before confirming. A hotel with a rooftop view does not necessarily offer the same outlook from every bedroom, so check the details of the room you are buying. Consider the full price alongside the convenience of the location.
A main meal at Etnea Roof
Etnea Roof Bar & Restaurant, on the hotel's seventh floor, publishes daily lunch from 1pm to 2:30pm and dinner from 7:30pm to 11pm. Its official menu link lists sea bass fillet with roasted-pepper sauce, buffalo stracciatella, black-olive crumble and spinach. The menu marks this fish as processed fresh and then frozen for preservation, so it should not be presented as necessarily caught that day. Discuss the dairy ingredients or other dietary requirements before ordering. Request a view table when booking, while allowing for weather and availability. Recheck the menu and service times for your travel date.
Leave room between booked activities
Use the monastery booking and your dinner time as the main anchors of the second day. Between them, you can extend a walk, return to a favourite square or rest at the hotel. Avoid giving yourself another appointment immediately after the tour unless you know its duration and finishing point. On departure day, keep the airport connection as the priority rather than adding one last indoor visit. A flexible route is easier to enjoy when a queue, a change in weather or simple tiredness alters the pace. Carry your transport and reservation details in an accessible place and confirm any changed opening arrangements shortly before travelling.
