Passau guide: three rivers, cathedral and Oberhaus planning

An elevated overview of Passau old town and its rivers.

The most useful first-day decision in Passau is to separate the old-town tip where three rivers meet from the high Veste Oberhaus. St Stephen's Cathedral, Rathausplatz and Dreiflüsseeck form a lower-town route; the fortress, museum and elevated views require their own travel and uphill time. This guide explores the centre and riverfronts first, then helps you choose whether to add Oberhaus according to your energy and interests. The famous organ also needs a current expectation: restoration means you should not buy a concert ticket assuming every part of the instrument will be played together.

From Passau Hbf towards the cathedral

Passau Hauptbahnhof is at Bahnhofstraße 29. Allow for luggage, walking and orientation before any first timed visit. Current storage and access information is particularly useful on a day trip. Save your return departure and select the final stop accordingly. Ending at the eastern tip of the old town and having dinner nearer the station require different calculations for getting back. Overnight visitors should establish the hotel's actual entrance before carrying bags along the wrong riverfront.

Make the cathedral surroundings the first substantial stop. This gives the subsequent descent to the river and walk towards the town's tip a coherent sequence. You do not need to enter every smaller landmark seen on the approach. First understand the relationship between cathedral, squares and riverbanks. Rain may favour a longer interior visit and shorter outdoor circuit. With children or someone needing a gentler route, leave the fortress ascent as a decision to revisit in the afternoon rather than including it automatically in the morning plan.

St Stephen's Cathedral and the current organ-concert situation

The official Passau sights page includes the cathedral among the city's principal landmarks. Give the exterior towers and Baroque interior different amounts of attention. If a concert interests you, use the diocese's official concert information. It states that extensive organ works mean all sections cannot currently be played together, with completion anticipated in 2028. Scaffolding may also temporarily obscure parts of the rear church area. These details help make your expectations realistic before purchasing a ticket.

The work does not mean every concert is cancelled. Check the programme for your actual date, including ticket sales and admission. A concert visit has a different schedule from an ordinary look inside the church. Put lunch and the Dreiflüsseeck walk around that choice. Visitors wanting only a short exterior stop can continue into the lower town after the surroundings. Respect worship and other religious uses. The building's reputation does not guarantee unrestricted access to every corner or a performance of the complete organ during your stay.

Rathausplatz and Dreiflüsseeck: read the water from two sides

Descend from the cathedral area to Rathausplatz and the Danube bank. A pause on the square makes the transition from elevated church surroundings to the river-level city easier to appreciate. Continue towards the eastern tip and Dreiflüsseeck, where the Danube, Inn and Ilz meet. Different currents and water colours can be fascinating, but a sharply separated colour boundary is not guaranteed in every weather and water condition. Spend a moment understanding which direction you arrived from and what stands across the water instead of leaving immediately after a photograph.

You can make the Inn-side return part of the walk. The official Innkai information places colourful houses and the Schaiblingsturm within this riverside setting. The Danube and Inn fronts of the same city offer different experiences. Shorten the return in stronger wind or rain rather than feeling obliged to remain beside exposed water. A boat excursion needs separate research into departure, boarding location and return time. Seeing a vessel on the river does not establish that it operates a city service you can board immediately.

Veste Oberhaus: museum, viewpoint and transport are separate choices

Consult the current Oberhausmuseum visitor page before the fortress section. The museum and viewing tower have different seasons and hours; tower admission ends before closing and bad weather can affect access. Simply seeking a high view takes less time than exploring the exhibitions and fortress story. The 2026 arrangements should not be read as uninterrupted year-round opening. Check your date carefully for a late-November or winter visit rather than applying the summer programme.

The official page links the current shuttle-bus timetable from Rathausplatz. Follow that link instead of using a departure copied from an older brochure. Walking up requires its own allowance for the ascent and the energy needed to return. The museum's notices currently report a lift out of operation due to a technical fault; discuss any access requirements with the operator before travelling. Completing the riverside centre and leaving the fortress for another day is also a reasonable choice. An elevated photograph should not require rushing through everything below.

A full meal at Bayerischer Löwe

Bayerischer Löwe at Dr.-Hans-Kapfinger-Straße 3 is an actual restaurant suitable for the arrival or return part of the route. The menu currently linked by its operator lists Böfflamott, braised beef in red-wine sauce with root vegetables and a bread dumpling. Consider the wine sauce when deciding whether it suits your preferences. Mixed mushrooms in herb cream with two bread dumplings provide a separate option, but the dairy sauce means that dish should not automatically be assumed vegan.

The restaurant distinguishes hot-food and last-order times from its general closing. It also explains that some freshly roasted dishes can sell out; ask whether a particular plate remains available. Both indoor entrances have steps and the toilets are downstairs, while garden access differs. Discuss actual access needs and a reservation with the business in advance. A seated meal while returning from the town's tip towards the station can create a calmer final section than leaving everything to the last minutes before the train.

An overnight stay near Rathausplatz

Hotel Wilder Mann is a real accommodation option in a historic building by Passau's Rathausplatz. The same building contains the Glass Museum, although a room reservation is a different activity from a museum visit. Check the hotel's current instructions for entrance, room category, vehicle approach and luggage. Similarly named hotels exist in other towns, so establish that the booked business is the one in Passau. A position close to the river does not mean every room has the same view.

Staying overnight lets the cathedral, Rathausplatz and three-river tip make a complete first day, with Oberhaus receiving separate time the next morning. In rain, the Glass Museum can be considered instead, using its own visiting arrangements. Passau becomes most rewarding when the low waterline and elevated defensive structure are connected thoughtfully. Give the concert, riverside walk and museum real time, and each panorama becomes a view of a different city layer you have had the chance to understand.
