A rewarding day in Weinheim does not require climbing to both of its castles before lunch. Marktplatz, Hermannshof and Exotenwald provide a garden-focused route connected to the old centre. Going uphill to Windeck is a separate choice, depending on opening conditions, weather and the walking preferences of your group. A Monday or Tuesday visitor should not interpret a photograph of the castle as a promise of access. This guide uses the square and gardens as the backbone of a first visit, adding the hill when it makes sense. An overnight stay also lets you separate the garden experience from the castle rather than squeezing both into the same afternoon.

Start at the main station and establish a base at Marktplatz
Weinheim (Bergstr) Hbf is at Am Hauptbahnhof 1. Keep the full station name when selecting your connection, and check the return journey if you are travelling through Mannheim or Heidelberg. Identify the main railway station separately from any local stop you intend to use. Leaving luggage at your hotel first can be more convenient than attempting a garden walk with a suitcase. Walking time varies with bags, breaks and the needs of the group; the line between two points on a map is not a reliable measure of how quickly you will arrive.
At Marktplatz, notice the slope of the square and the surrounding facades. It can serve as a meeting point throughout the day, rather than merely somewhere to return for food. Make a short loop through an adjoining street, then come back to establish your bearings. Avoid spending the entire first part of the morning at a table if a garden visit is your main interest. Looking at a church from outside does not include automatic interior admission; check activities and the information at the door. This first circuit helps you decide between a predominantly garden-based day and a route with an uphill addition.

Hermannshof: let the season shape your visit
Hermannshof's own opening page gives daily hours of 10am to 6pm in March and October. Other seasons have different closing patterns, so do not carry an October evening schedule into winter. At Babostraße 5, explore how neighbouring plant groups are arranged instead of hunting for a single flower seen in a photograph. Autumn leaves and seed heads offer different subjects from summer's concentrated colours. No photograph guarantees that the same flower will be in bloom on the day you arrive. Allow time to look at the garden as a designed whole.
The garden's admission information confirms that ordinary entry is free. It also says the secondary entrance on Grabengasse is reached by steps, making Babostraße the appropriate starting point when choosing an entrance suited to your needs. An organised private group tour is a different service from an independent walk. Use the paths and follow garden rules rather than entering planting beds to take a closer photograph. A seated interval before the forest section helps bring everyone back to a common pace. Children may enjoy comparing the height and leaves of a few plants more than working through a long list of species.

Link Schlosspark to an Exotenwald loop
The city's Exotenwald information describes three marked walks in the forest adjoining Schlosspark. After Hermannshof, pause in the park and choose a woodland loop that fits your remaining time. The shapes of trunks and tree crowns are the attraction here; you do not need to find a monument at every bend. Treat the forest as a distinct walk rather than a quick side street off the square. Identify the return part of your route before setting out so that a short plan does not accidentally become a much longer excursion.
Year-round free access does not mean every path will feel equally comfortable under every weather condition. Complete the walk in daylight and choose its length according to conditions underfoot. On a wet day, retain the garden and square while shortening the woodland section. If you also intend to visit Windeck, consider the combined effort of two different walks. A garden and forest day is already a complete way to experience Weinheim. There is no need to turn the town's two-castle identity into a requirement to tick off both hills before catching a train.

Windeck: check access before starting the climb
The municipal Windeck page warns that the castle grounds are normally closed on Monday and Tuesday along with the beer garden. Events can cause further closures, so check the operator before climbing. The tower is accessible during opening hours only, and climbing it after darkness falls is prohibited. It cannot be treated as an unrestricted final viewpoint at the end of the day. Wachenburg is a different structure on another hill and should not be presented as an automatic extra room of the Windeck visit. Give each proposed climb its own place in the schedule.
Once you choose the uphill option, allow for water, a meal and the return to town. If some members of the group prefer to remain around the gardens, meeting again on the square can be a practical alternative. Keep the distinction between a woodland path and the enclosed castle grounds on a closed day: an open walking route does not open a castle gate. Do not begin descending at the last possible minute if you have a restaurant booking. Over two days, assigning Windeck to an appropriate opening day also avoids rushing the garden or waiting at a locked entrance.
A substantial meal at Restaurant Tafelspitz
At Marktplatz 7, Restaurant Tafelspitz's own menu lists beef Tafelspitz with horseradish sauce, bouillon potatoes and vegetables for €26.90. Its vegan vegetable Maultaschen come in a light coconut sauce with spinach and cherry tomatoes for €16.90. These are concrete examples of a seated main meal rather than a snack standing in for lunch or dinner. Budget separately for drinks and extras, and check the menu for your actual date. Returning to the square for food gives the uphill section a proper endpoint and an opportunity to rest.
An overnight base at Marktplatzhotel
Marktplatzhotel is a real accommodation option at the same Marktplatz 7 address. A central location does not mean it stands directly beside the station; the operator describes the railway station as approximately one kilometre away. Ask about room access, breakfast arrangements and luggage storage when booking. You could use the first day for Hermannshof, Schlosspark and a short forest loop, leaving Windeck for a suitable opening day. On departure morning, choose a limited central walk that still allows time to collect bags and reach the railway station. That finishes the trip without turning the final hour into another hill-climbing challenge.
