How many days should you spend in Virginia Beach?
Two days give a first visit a useful balance: one day for the Oceanfront and Rudee Inlet, followed by a carefully arranged Cape Henry visit or a slower second stretch of coast. With only one day, keep the itinerary around the Boardwalk rather than trying to connect every beach district. Virginia Beach covers much more ground than a compact historic town. Whether your hotel is beside the ocean or farther inland changes how much of the day can comfortably be spent on foot.

The official destination guide presents the city through coastal walks, seafood and outdoor experiences. Use that character to shape the trip: leave time for changing light and a proper meal instead of collecting distant stops. In autumn, summer entertainment listings should not become promises of an event during your stay. If a festival matters to the journey, check its dated programme before building the rest of the day around it.
How do you reach the coast and move around?
Norfolk International Airport is a regional arrival point. Its ground transportation page lists rental cars, taxis and ride-share options. Arrange the onward journey around your flight and hotel, allowing for traffic rather than assuming a fixed transfer time. A hotel on the Oceanfront makes the first day's walk straightforward, while a Cape Henry outing requires a separate transport decision. Check the return journey too, especially if you intend to stay out for dinner.
The HRT VB Wave and Bayfront services are seasonal. Their summer timetable is not a year-round guarantee. HRT's separate Route 30 service for the October 9–11, 2026 Boardwalk Art Show applied only to those dates. For a later October trip, consult the current journey planner rather than waiting at a stop on the strength of an old frequent-service timetable. This distinction is particularly important when travelling without a car.
What works for a first day on the Boardwalk?
The Boardwalk runs approximately three miles between 2nd and 40th Streets. Begin near your accommodation and choose a manageable section instead of treating the entire length as compulsory. Walk on the ocean side, pause for food inland, and return by the same route if the weather becomes less comfortable. Cyclists should follow the marked separate route; stopping for photographs should not block the flow of pedestrians.

For the afternoon, consider Rudee Inlet at the southern end of the Oceanfront. Harbour activity provides a different setting from the open sand. If booking a boat excursion, confirm the actual departure point, weather cancellation rules and return time with the operator. Maintenance equipment and working docks are not visitor attractions to enter. The 2020 harbour-maintenance photograph illustrates infrastructure, not a currently available activity or permission to walk through a work zone.
What must be arranged before visiting Cape Henry?
Preservation Virginia publishes Tuesday–Sunday opening from 10am to 5pm for the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse. Because it stands within a military installation, visitors need a timed booking and must meet the base-entry conditions. Adults without base access are instructed to submit SECNAV Form 5512 at least five and no more than thirty days before their ticket date. Check identification requirements with the operator before purchasing, particularly as an international visitor. Monday, holiday closures and weather interruptions require an alternative plan.

The striped New Cape Henry Lighthouse is not open to the public. The archive photograph looking down toward the old tower was taken from the new lighthouse, so it does not represent a viewpoint available on an ordinary visit. Avoid building the whole second day around an unconfirmed admission. A coastal walk remains a sensible alternative if clearance, mobility needs or weather prevents a tower visit. Simply arriving by taxi at the base does not guarantee entry.
Where can you stay and eat a substantial dinner?
Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront is at 3001 Atlantic Avenue. It lists check-in at 4pm and checkout at 11am, paid parking, breakfast for a fee and no airport shuttle. These details make it practical to compare the full stay cost rather than only the room rate. If arriving early, arrange the first walk independently of immediate room availability. Confirm the booked room's actual view category; an oceanfront hotel does not mean every room has the same outlook.
Catch 31's official dinner menu offers Bourbon Maple Glazed Salmon with garlic mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. This is a complete main-course option after the walk. Ask about the glaze and relevant allergens before ordering if they affect your choice. Dinner begins at 5pm, but the menu heading and general footer display different finishing times, so confirm the last ordering time directly. An earlier reservation also leaves more flexibility for returning to accommodation without relying on a late seasonal shuttle.
How should the coastal archive photographs be interpreted?
The photographs show particular moments in the coast's history. The 2019 Oceanfront image is not evidence of today's beach width, construction boundaries or swimming conditions. Follow current signs and closures on arrival. Likewise, a maintenance scene, an operational lighthouse viewpoint or activity inside a military facility does not establish unrestricted visitor access. The distinction matters even when the image itself is a genuine publicly reusable photograph.

For a relaxed two-day trip, make only one major commitment on the second day. If the lighthouse booking and entry requirements are confirmed, leave the remaining hours open. If they are not, save another section of the Boardwalk for later and spend more time around the coast already within easy reach. This approach keeps the visit centred on the shoreline and harbour rather than on hurried transfers, while leaving room for the meal and quiet breaks that make a short coastal stay worthwhile.
