Plan Reutlingen at two different scales: historic gates, Marienkirche and narrow streets in the centre, with an optional ascent towards Achalm for a wider city view. These are different walking experiences. For a first visit, explore the old town in the morning and choose between an art museum and the hill later. This distinction also prevents the city's famous narrow passage from becoming the sole purpose of the day. Add a substantial meal and time to return to the station, and even a short visit can combine several aspects of Reutlingen.

From Reutlingen Hbf into the centre
Reutlingen Hbf is at Bahnhofstraße 3 according to DB. If arriving through Stuttgart or Tübingen, review the current status of your final train. Identify the route towards the historic centre and mark your accommodation on the map. Where luggage storage is available, use it before beginning the walk. Exploring the centre and ascending Achalm require different distances and gradients. If adding the hill, calculate the return to the station using the whole route rather than only the flat central portion.
The municipality's sights page is a useful starting point. It lists Tübinger Tor and Gartentor among the surviving medieval gates. They are separate stops, so avoid applying the same name to both. Constructing a central circuit around squares, the church surroundings and pedestrian Wilhelmstraße helps explain the transition from transport spaces into older streets. A lengthy shopping stop should be considered separately from the time needed for the museum or hill walk.

Marienkirche, squares and street details
Begin around Marienkirche by studying the exterior and its relationship with the surrounding streets. Looking up at the tower and climbing it are different visits; verify current entry arrangements before making a stair ascent a definite part of the plan. The official city guide relates the church, fountains and historic buildings within an old-town circuit. Walking along Wilhelmstraße and entering the side streets lets you notice changing building periods and the different widths of public spaces.
Rather than treating each square as an empty photograph stop, pause to observe how a fountain or statue relates to the surrounding façades. Everyday shopping activity forms part of the central scene as well. Keep shop entrances clear when taking pictures and allow other pedestrians through narrow spaces. In rainy weather, shorten the outdoor walk and give the indoor option greater weight. A set of photographs taken in good light does not establish that every location will have the same conditions during your visit.
Make Spreuerhofstraße a brief observation stop
Guinness World Records records Spreuerhofstraße at 31 centimetres at its narrowest point. This does not describe a comfortable broad walking route. Observing the constricted space from outside is a sufficient visit; nobody needs to attempt squeezing through. Visitors carrying large bags, pushing a buggy or using mobility equipment can continue through normal adjacent streets. Place this brief stop within a wider circuit of gates, church and squares instead of reducing the city to its unusual record.
Do not obstruct other people or building entrances while attempting to capture the narrow passage. After a few minutes, return to the broader central route. With children, use it as an example of different street dimensions rather than a race or squeezing challenge. The record is interesting, but it is not an attraction that fills an entire afternoon. Decide on the later museum or hill section independently of the short time spent here.

Choose an art museum or the Achalm ascent
Kunstmuseum Reutlingen's current programme distinguishes its Spendhaus and konkret venues. Love Will Tear Us Apart at Spendhaus is listed for 1 May–1 November 2026, while MOVE! Scheinbar kinetisch at konkret runs from 18 September 2026 to 28 February 2027. These are not two names for one room. Identify the location of the exhibition that interests you. Current visitor information gives Tuesday–Sunday and holiday opening from 11:00 to 17:00, Thursday extension to 20:00 and Monday closure.
For an outdoor alternative, consider Achalm. The city describes a 707-metre summit, limited remnants of the former castle and a rebuilt viewing tower. Do not expect an intact palace interior. Suitable footwear, the weather and enough daylight for the return matter here. Treat it as a distinct ascent rather than an automatic continuation of the flat city streets. With limited time, choose either the art museum or Achalm instead of making both compulsory. An indoor preference and a walking preference can produce equally worthwhile city days.

A Maultaschen main course at Barfüßer
Barfüßer Hausbrauerei Reutlingen, at Obere Wässere 9, is a real restaurant option within the central programme. The September 2026 menu linked by the restaurant lists Brauhaus Maultaschen with dark-beer sauce, softened onions and potato salad at €16.90. Ask about the filling and sauce before ordering. The same menu offers Allgäuer Käsespätzle with mountain cheese, onions and a side salad as a vegetarian main-course option.
General opening and the discounted lunch programme are different arrangements. The operator offers its changing weekday lunch from 11:00 to 15:00 Monday–Friday, excluding holidays, and notes that demand can cause it to sell out sooner. Do not confuse the price of your chosen regular-menu main course with that changing lunch offer. Although Barfüßer is a brewery restaurant, eating there does not require drinking alcohol. A reservation can reduce uncertain waiting after a museum visit or the return from Achalm. Review the menu and actual availability on your travel date.
Stay at Achalm Hotel or divide the route
Achalm Hotel is a genuine accommodation option at Achalm (Gewand) 2. The operator describes its position below the castle remnants with views towards Reutlingen. This is distinct from flat station-side accommodation, so weigh the hillside setting together with the transport you need. A hotel reservation does not guarantee access to the viewing tower or every walking path. Review room conditions, food arrangements, transport and cancellation terms for your specific date.
With an overnight stay, put the old town and museum on the first day and choose a suitable-weather second day for the ascent. Day visitors can enjoy the central circuit and a single longer activity at a more comfortable pace. Before returning, check DB's live departures and preserve time to reach the station. A useful Reutlingen plan lets you observe the narrow passage without making it an obligatory squeeze, distinguish the museum venues correctly and approach the hill above town as a genuine walking choice.
