A useful first itinerary for Brunei does not explore a compact capital and a rainforest at the same pace. In Bandar Seri Begawan, the riverfront, Kampong Ayer and market life reward a slow city day. Ulu Temburong requires separately arranged transport, guiding and weather decisions. Tatilmerkezi Stork suggests three or four nights based in the capital, adding the forest only through a confirmed programme. This approach avoids reducing the country to a mosque photograph or a rapid border crossing. Water neighbourhoods, local meals and forest details deserve their own context. The aim is an understandable first introduction, with enough time to observe rather than rushing to collect landmarks.

Learn local rules before travelling

FCDO advice checked on 4 October 2026 highlights serious legal differences. Same-sex sexual activity and trans people's gender expression are criminalised. A death-penalty moratorium does not remove other penalties or risks for LGBT+ visitors. Friday lunchtime business closures and Ramadan restrictions on public daytime eating affect planning. Advice against walking alone in forests and warnings about riverbank crocodiles also matter. This guide does not hide those conditions or promise the same holiday experience to every reader. Assess current official advice, personal circumstances and insurance before deciding to travel, and separately confirm coverage for forest or boat activities.

A capital base: the centre or Gadong?

Accommodation with convenient access to central Bandar Seri Begawan can simplify the riverfront and Kampong Ayer day. If considering Gadong, compare the morning journey into the centre and the evening return alongside meal options. A property's map label matters less than the actual entrance street and vehicle stopping point. Questions about air-conditioning, steps, breakfast, drying clothes and a guide's collection time can also improve the forest day. Leave rest time for children rather than making the programme depend on continuous activity. Accommodation within Kampong Ayer would offer a different setting, but this guide recommends no particular home or business. Water access, luggage, privacy and mobility arrangements must be understood in advance.

Kampong Ayer: look across first, then make a short visit

Let Kampong Ayer anchor the first full day. Official tourism information connects the stilt buildings, wooden passages and Cultural and Tourism Gallery. Find your bearings from the landward riverfront before agreeing the destination jetty and return with a boat operator. Instead of attempting all water neighbourhoods, select a confirmed accessible gallery and a short permitted walkway section. These are real homes rather than an open-air set. Do not turn doorways into photo positions or enter private spaces without invitation. Ask before photographing people. If the gallery is closed, reconsider the visit with a guide; boarding a boat simply for a photograph is not compulsory.

Confirm appropriately sized life jackets, the boarding step, a rain alternative and the fare agreement beforehand. Leaning over the river edge or trailing hands outside the boat is inappropriate. After returning, allow a seated meal and rest in the capital. If including a religious site, obtain current visitor hours, clothing requirements and camera rules from the institution. Avoid interrupting worship. Viewing the surroundings and entering as a visitor do not necessarily follow the same access conditions, so the city programme should remain adaptable to the arrangements in force that day.

Kianggeh market: a short morning centred on produce

For another city focus, consider market life around Kianggeh. Ask locally about current activity hours before planning an early visit. An older photograph does not establish that stalls occupy the same positions today. Watch vegetables, fruit and packaged local products from a place that does not obstruct trading. Asking how a product is prepared or whether it travels well can offer a more meaningful encounter than buying indiscriminately. Do not burden the market morning with an extensive museum checklist. When heat or rain increases, a seated break and a return vehicle should be available. The produce photograph does not guarantee a specific stall's hygiene, stock or current menu.

Ulu Temburong: treat the forest day as a separate operation

Begin with the official tourism site's licensed travel-agent list when comparing a guided Ulu Temburong programme. Who handles capital collection, road and boat stages, park access, meals and return? Ask each question explicitly. A ride-hailing option on a tourism page does not mean every part of the national park is independently reachable by taxi. For a canopy activity, discuss stairs, height, slippery surfaces and individual suitability. Rain or river conditions may lead to cancellation, and no replacement stop should be assumed guaranteed. The rainforest is not a small park that can be fitted casually between capital meals.

Agree a balance of short guided walking, observation and rest. Instead of seeking promised wildlife sightings, pay attention to the forest's structure, layers of leaves and quiet observation. Roots and climbing plants on a single tree can be worth noticing. The old Ulu Ulu jetty photograph gives historical context for a park connection; it does not prove that the same property currently offers rooms or transfers. Obtain actual boarding and landing points from the current operator. If adding a forest night, request written details of beds, toilets, electricity, communications and meals. Do not assume services will match those of the capital accommodation.

Ambuyat, nasi katok and a Temburong meal

Official food information describes ambuyat as a sago-based dish accompanied by cacah dipping sauce. If served, politely ask how to use the joined sticks known as candas. Trying an unfamiliar texture does not require an excessive order. Establish whether the sauce contains fish, prawns or other relevant allergens. For nasi katok, look for the basic combination of rice, fried chicken and sambal on the menu, while obtaining the actual price from the business. On the Temburong branch, wajid provides a regional sweet option: official tourism information distinguishes the version made with beras Jawa rice. A sweet packet should not replace the whole meal on a long boat day. Drinking water and a proper lunch break belong in the confirmed programme.

Transport, entry registration and a four-night example

Brunei Tourism's transport guide distinguishes taxis, Dart, buses and water taxis. Check current availability and the final return option rather than relying on fixed hours or invented fares. Verify visa requirements for your own passport with the relevant authority, and follow the tourism site's link to the immigration portal for E-Arrival Card requirements. An example four-night distribution is arrival and settling in, Kampong Ayer on the first full day, market and a short cultural visit on the second, a confirmed Temburong programme on the third, and a calm departure morning. Friday arrangements or changing weather may require exchanging city days. The Stork suggests starting with one strong nature day and two clear urban focuses; adding more stops does not automatically create a deeper understanding.
